Before there was Alternative Energy Technologies , our company’s engineers have proposed designed and built wind turbine systems for the Department of Agriculture, Department of Energy, and private industry for over 5 years.  The technology innovations they helped create have had a dramatic impact on the total industry, and today, the  Alternative Energy Technologies Energy Development  continues to upgrade existing and new technology designs for cost effective high performance wind turbine systems, adding many new innovations made possible by mechanical, electronic, and computer technologies not previously available.

Alternative Energy Technologies continuing focus on improving existing vertical axis wind turbine technology developed by the company’s predecessors has led to a highly efficient system deliverable at lower cost, easier to maintain and less costly to operate than current horizontal axis wind turbines. The newest commercial system is scheduled for introduction in 2012, and is capable of producing up to 2.5 mw of power.  Like the Mid Range systems, the 2.5 mw turbine utilizes a new aerodynamic three-blade configuration, mounted on a new, heavy duty, easy to install tower.
The company’s proprietary new design significantly improves wind turbine performance and efficiency beyond virtually all current horizontal axis wind turbines, using numerous “breakthrough innovations” unique to the industry:


  • Significant improvement in performance using “ultra large rotor assemblies” (wing structures instead of ‘propellers’) supported aerodynamically as the rotor turns. Larger rotor assemblies significantly increase power generation and reduces the cost of energy.
  • Vertical Axis assemblies are omni-directional for consistent and optimum wind power utilization, regardless of wind direction or periodic wind speed shifts.
  • Aerodynamic computerized load controls provide for self starting systems and aerodynamic self-braking in high winds to protect assets and the environment.
  • Computer controlled Variable Geometry Airfoils (VGA) increase maximum power at variable wind speeds, reduces resistance and drag from the rotor and results in significantly greater wind turbine efficiency and energy output;
  • Full computer controls are compatible with “Smart Grid Management” systems and offer remote computer monitoring, and management of all systems from a single remote computer console.
  • Linear Induction Generation (LIG) replaces conventional turbine drive trains and gear boxes which increases life expectancy and lowers operating and maintenance costs;
  • Turbine system Options include; integrated  solar and biomass energy technologies, and proprietary energy-storage and power generation mechanics to deliver “firm” electrical power on demand, without reliance on a regional grid if necessary, allowing for creation of effective and secure “micro-grid” development customized to suit customer requirements.

Alternative Energy Technologies 2.5 mw  Energy Systems cost much less to build and install than existing horizontal wind systems with similar power output. Annual O&M costs are typically a third to half of conventional systems.

The 2.5 mw Energy System is robust, long lived and easy to install utilizing its new  tower system which can be erected on site in just a few days without large cranes, or heavy equipment. The new  2.5 mw wind energy system is designed to produce power at . 0 2 cents or less !

Alternative Energy Technologies has designed an optional integrated Hydrogen production and generation technology that can be used with the turbine to allow for delivery of rated power “on demand”, for  pre-determined periods of time even with low or no wind.
The 2.5 mw is the largest turbine  Alternative Energy Technologies designed, with a commercial introduction and sales targeted for 2012.  The system has a rotor diameter of 40 feet and an overall height of 180 feet. The rotor has approximately 60,000 square feet of swept area, which produces ~ 2.00 + megawatts of power in a 25 mile per hour wind, with a peak output of >2.5 megawatts.

Optional components are custom designed per project, and are quoted and sold separately . The hydrogen system can be retrofit at any time after installation of the turbines.  Upon customer request,

Alternative Energy Technologies proprietary control mechanisms consist of robust, distributed processor micro-computer technologies (schematic in Figure E).  Controls are built around prevailing “best” computer technology to provide for maximum processing speeds and high volume RAM and hard drive storage.  The control system software continuously monitors wind turbine and wind-hydrogen systems, checking for abnormalities and inconsistencies that may indicate pending mechanical difficulties.  If the control system requires shutting down turbine operation for preventative measures, the “fault” information is recorded for analysis and immediate repair.
This mechanism provides comprehensive operating control and collects and logs continuous system performance data in real time.  Controls can be linked to the internet, or a high speed phone line, hard-wire or wireless, to provide remote monitoring and direct control of the entire system and related wind components.
Alternative Energy Technologies  proprietary control algorithm is programmed into the system to optimize power output under any wind condition.  An interdependent array of safety and consistency checks is also programmed into the system for real-time monitoring, to ensure that wind turbine structural design limits are not exceeded, and to adjust power compatibility with utility line capacity.

The main tower structure for Alternative Energy Technologies Turbines is designed to be erected without the use of large, expensive cranes.  In remote field locations this is particularly important as it implies that heavily upgraded access roads are not required, which significantly impacts facility installation costs, and reduces intrusion on the pristine nature of many sites, reducing overall environmental impact on the area.  The diagram below shows how the upper tower section is installed without use of a crane.



The Vertical Axis Rotor is designed for explicit safety, with both ends of the vertical blade attached to the tower structure. Alternative Energy Technologies   wind turbines have additional safety cables strung within each blade to further ensure that any blade fatigue or fracture will be contained in the structure .  The figure on the right demonstrates a safety cable emerging from a lower blade end prior to attachment to the rotor assembly.  It is similarly attached at the top end of the blade.

Standard quality control procedures during manufacturing ensure trouble free system performance. However, diligent maintenance supports long term reliable equipment operation. Most parts are designed for a twenty year life or longer, with periodic planned replacement of high wear items. This requires a prescribed maintenance schedule with bi-annual lubrication and inspections, which is provided in Alternative Energy Technologies Maintenance Manuals provided with each system.

A Company Sponsored Annual Maintenance Program is available at a nominal cost.  Multi-turbine facilities are encouraged to utilize Alternative Energy Technologies maintenance services as a beneficial resource for trouble-free operation and extended equipment life.


Generators and operating systems are located on a sturdy catwalk platform at the mid-point of the structure with easy access for maintenance and service.  The Rotor Blades can be “lowered” against the tower structure for inspection, repair or replacement.  No large crane is required for periodic maintenance, service, repair or replacement of parts.


Alternative Energy technologies Wind Turbines  and Wind-Hydrogen Energy Systems are expected to come with a full five year  warranty against defects in design, and materials.  Detailed warranty information will be provided on request.
Optional Hydrogen Production / Generation
Alternative Energy Technologies utilizes proven existing technology as well as newly designed systems to create a proprietary, cost effective H2 production, storage, and generation configuration that can be combined with our commercial turbines to generate electrical power ON DEMAND or in the temporary absence of wind.
Hydrogen is produced on site by the wind turbine, stored for use by fuel cells or hydrogen-fueled engines on demand – a “free” fuel for turbine operation, with no pollutants or harmful emissions into the air, water or soil.  Using this optional addition, Alternative Energy technologies wind turbines can become full time alternative energy generation systems, fueled by totally non-polluting, cost effective wind and hydrogen.
Hydrogen is generally stored at a centralized location, depending on volume requirements and other factors.  Operating components for Hydrogen power generation will typically be located at a centralized location convenient to the wind turbine array being used..


For LARGE commercial utility facilities, Alternative Energy technologies recommends a “centralized” design plan for H2 production, storage and generation, and will custom design the system for optimum efficiency and profitability.  The system may incorporate additional hydrogen fueled generators on site to increase power generation capacity, using wind-produced hydrogen as the fuel of choice.

Some site  data may be obtained through published information as well as on-site engineering assessments. All successful wind energy projects rely heavily on average wind speed, terrain, and soil characteristics, accessibility to utility lines and substations.

Most site assessments can be completed in 60 days, depending on available resource data. Site selection is vital for successful system operation. Alternative Energy Technologies assistance with site assessment can ensure optimum energy output, and cost effective installation.
Alternative Energy Technologies-trained or regionally ‘authorized’ technicians can provide all required services from engineering to turnkey installation.  Upon request,Alternative Energy Technologies will provide written cost quotations and proposals for turbine systems, facility design, site preparation, equipment procurement, delivery, supervision, installation and contractual operational management.
